itslearning focuses on visual learning and assessment in 2011

What new features can you expect from itslearning this year? According to Market Research Manager Morten Fahlvik, the major details in the 2011 roadmap have already been finalised.

“As a learning platform, the reason itslearning exists is to support educational practice,” explains Morten.

The development is inspired by proven practice, feedback from our users and our product principles. As a result, this year we’re focusing on developing features to help both teachers and learners visualise how learning takes place – and improving our assessment tools. Our ambition is that itslearning is perceived as user-friendly and engaging.

Visual teaching and learning

The product management team has created a learning wheel that is used as a foundation when the product is designed. Visual teaching and learning are key concepts, as Morten explains.

Visible learning means that both teachers and students experience that learning takes place,” says Morten. “When teachers see learning in the classroom, they know what works and can plan the next phase in the learning process. When students see and experience learning, they also know what works and will hopefully use this experience in the future. If the learning is invisible, it is hard for both teachers and students to know what should come next.”

Visual teaching occurs when learning is the explicit goal. If the teaching is visible for the students they are more confident as to where they should be heading, and also know how to get there.”

Assessment and assessment rubrics

When asked to reveal one of the most important features on the roadmap, Morten doesn’t hesitate to bring up assessment. According to Morten, assessment is a main focus this year – both self-assessment and a new feature called assessment rubrics. “Assessment rubrics are scoring guides that are used to measure a student’s learning outcome. This rubric, or scoring guide, is used to evaluate a student's learning based on a range of criteria – not just a single numerical score. If the assessment rubric is presented to the students before they start working on assignments, they are aware of the criteria on which their work will be assessed and can reflect as they go,” says Morten.

What else can we expect in 2011?

In addition to visible learning and assessment rubrics, itslearning users have a lot of exciting new features in store. Here are some of the most important:

  • New tools for homework and reporting
  • In order to make learning more visible, we plan to enhance the ILP, planner, workflow, and progress report
  • An enhanced parent portal
  • Better information workflow thanks to Live@edu email and more news content blocks
  • Improved video and SCORM uploading, video playback and file uploading
  • The ability to add tests to the library
  • An improved extension API for more comprehensive integration of 3rd party teaching tools
  • Improved usability and workflow based on customer feedback
