DeKalb County School District- inspiring educational excellence!

In July of 2015, the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) and itslearning initiated a partnership to focus on teaching and learning excellence.

DCSD is the third largest school district in the state of Georgia - with over 100,000 students and 6,000 teachers. DCSD’s vision is to inspire the community of learners to achieve educational excellence. It is dedicated to producing globally competitive students who are prepared for higher education, work, and life-long learning.

To accomplish this, the DeKalb County School District has identified and adopted core beliefs that clearly align to core beliefs held by itslearning. Specifically, these include:

  • Focusing on teaching and learning
  • Embedding an equitable and accessible 21st-century learning environment, supported by the use of emerging technologies throughout the curriculum
  • Ensuring that an effective teacher instructs every class

DeKalb County School District selected itslearning as a partner in order to realize efficiencies in curriculum development and management efforts aligned to the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE). Their intent is to systematically maintain a dynamic curriculum management and delivery environment for the students, teachers, and parents of DCSD.

The itslearning platform will allow DCSD to develop electronic coursework, deliver it with unprecedented reach and flexibility, and dynamically manage its continued use over time. Between July and October 2015 – more than 265 DCSD courses were loaded to the itslearning platform, all aligned to the Georgia Standards of Excellence. They contain teaching and learning resources, assignments, and tasks for teachers and students.

Student learning is the ultimate measure of the success of teachers and instructional leaders. DeKalb County School District is also using the itslearning platform to deliver Student Learning Objective (SLO) assessments to students across the entire district. SLOs are content-specific, grade-level learning objectives that are measureable, focused on growth in student learning, and aligned to curriculum standards. As a measure of teachers’ impact on student learning, SLOs give educators, school systems, and state leaders an additional means by which to understand, value, and recognize success in the classroom. The primary purpose of SLOs is to improve student learning at the classroom level. An equally important purpose of SLOs is to provide evidence of each teacher’s instructional impact on student learning.

Cynthia Brictson (Interim Deputy Superintendent) of the Curriculum Instruction division and Gary Brantley (Chief Information Officer) of the Informational Technology department are leading this effort in reimagining learning for the DeKalb County School District.

They represent a superior example of technology and academics collaborating for success.
